Thanks Sam for the head's up on the inaccuracies involving the whole British/English thing...made changes accordingly. Though today's England is no long the Great Britain of old, England was still the seat of power in the British Empire and synonymous with the British Army i.e. the Redcoats. The Continental Army wasn't completely comprised of American born soldiers, but included African slaves and Irish immigrants and we are still called the Yanks.

The history between our two countries gives the game a little extra meaning. More and more Americans are gravitating to the EPL not only because of it being one of the best leagues in the world, but because we can experience in our shared language.

In terms of the game, England is a superior side front to back. If you can continually put Rooney in dangerous situations around the goal he'll eventually score. I'll be happy if the US gets a tie. Lampard and Gerrard for England and Donovan and Dempsey are going to be the difference makers in the game. I can't wait until June 12th. It's great that the game is on Saturday as well. See you in Rustenburg...in spirit.

Really? The MLS is the best league in the world? AHAHAHA! I'm afraid that title belongs to the English Premier League or La Liga.

A good article; don't mind you showing some national pride and wanting to beat us Limeys, but a few comments from a football-loving Englishman living in LA:

"...kicking English redcoat butt..." - Actually the redcoats were British

"...while it would send the British straight into national mourning" - Only the English would be in mourning; the rest of the UK (Scotland, Wales & N. Ireland) have their own teams and would most likely be very happy. (Unusually the constituent nations of the UK are allowed to compete as separate countries in international football).

"Being a Revolutionary War nerd myself, I’d love to see some historical references put into the promotion, but I won’t keep my hopes up."
- Well then you'd know that the Revolutionary War was against Great Britain, whereas this game of football is against England (which hasn't existed as a sovereign state, let alone have its own army, since 1707). Including Revolutionary War references would only serve to reinforce the American misconception that the UK and England are the same thing. I live in LA and i think I've only met a handful of Americans that even know what the English flag looks like!

Anyway, if there's any confusion:

Btw Donovan's form at Everton is a worry for us at the moment....
